Complex medical implants made with metal 3D printing enable remarkable designs, but finishing them remains a major challenge. Removing supports, polishing intricate geometries and preparing parts for use can be time-consuming, costly and physically demanding for operators. FlexiFinish, a COGNIMAN demonstrator, shows how robotics can transform this post-processing step through safe human-robot collaboration and intelligent automation. The use case comes from CROOM Medical in Ireland, a leading orthopaedic implant manufacturer where complex geometries make manual finishing particularly demanding. Developed by IRT, ALDAKIN and NORCE within COGNIMAN, FlexiFinish is a flexible robotic platform that adapts to each geometry. By combining sensors, planning algorithms and CAD/CAM with Digital Twin data, the system guides support removal, polishing and surface finishing while safely collaborating with operators.
