In previous episodes, Jeff talked about the benefits of including pepper spray among your personal defense resources. There are different pepper spray formulas, and they all cause temporary pain for the attacker. But only an OC (oleoresin capsicum) hot pepper extract inflames the attacker's mucous membranes as well, making it the most effective formula. When choosing pepper spray, look for a minimum STRENGTH - how hot it is, thus how painful - of 1 million SHUs (Scoville Heat Units). The higher the SHU rating, the more effective the pepper spray. Look for a CONCENTRATION - which indicates how long the irritation will last - of 5% or more. The cannister's SAFETY and TRIGGER mechanism should be designed to prevent accidental discharge of the spray but also easy to activate under stress. A cannister with about ½ to 1 oz. of pepper spray is small and concealable, so it's easy to carry. A nozzle that emits a STREAM is better than a MIST because the wind can blow a mist back at you. A stream can be more precisely placed on the attacker to get the best outcome for you. Aim for the attacker's face, preferably the eyes, because the irritant will force the eyes shut so the attacker can see you. Spray for about 1 to 2 seconds; a larger dose might actually slow the effect of the irritant. Pepper spray's effectiveness is NOT guaranteed, so get some distance between you and the attacker. Have a backup plan of what you will do if the pepper spray doesn't stop the attacker.
