The Institute for Child Healthcare Africa (ICHA) is working to transform pediatric and newborn care across Africa by combining compassionate medical care with practical training for local healthcare professionals. Based in Arusha, Tanzania, ICHA provides life-saving care to premature and critically ill newborns in partner hospitals such as Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre, while mentoring Tanzanian doctors and nurses to strengthen long-term pediatric care. Through innovative, low-cost approaches to neonatal medicine, the team has helped achieve survival rates for premature infants that are rarely seen in many low-resource settings. ICHA’s work focuses on four key areas: • Delivering high-impact neonatal care for hospitalized newborns • Providing pediatric and maternal outpatient care through the Arusha Pediatric & Maternal Care Centre • Mentoring and training African pediatricians and NICU nurses • Hosting the Tiny Feet Big Steps Neonatology Conference, the largest neonatology training conferences in Africa Since 2021, the Tiny Feet Big Steps conferences have trained hundreds of doctors and nurses from hospitals across more than 21 African countries, helping spread practical, evidence-based neonatal care that can save newborn lives. By combining clinical care, education, and partnership with African hospitals, ICHA is working toward a future where every child has access to quality healthcare and the chance to thrive.
