Materials Science and Engineering - Graduate School at NC State

Audio Transcription: When I had my list of candidate schools, I was really looking for a department that's on the rise rather than the department that's just sort of hanging on. Material Science and Engineering at NC State is really a rapidly climbing program. In order to go from a great program to the top program, it really requires all the pieces to coming together at the same time. This is the place that has invested in having grad students succeed and do the best research that they can do. I want to be a scientist who is always looking at new things that are interesting, trying to solve problems in a way that no one has really thought to solve them before. I like the aspect of working on something that could have a direct impact within my lifetime. Our goal is very simple. We believe that we're training students who are going to be the leaders in whatever fields they go into, whatever direction they go into. I just got a really good feeling here when I toured. It was almost like when you came in the professors were ready to treat you like a peer. I want my students to be happy. I want them to find a career that they want, and for every student it's unique and I think it's important to understand what that student wants so that you can help them succeed. A lot of the faculty like to say that they work with their students rather than their students work for them. That gives already an impression of how the dynamic is within the department. When you give students the opportunity for ownership there are going to go into the workforce, whether it's in academia or in industry, and be prepared to interact, engage with others, and really make important contributions. The ability to really conduct research independently has been tremendously useful and it's kind of the way I imagined that a job actually works. Where you're getting help, but in the end you're responsible for your product, you're responsible for thinking through the solutions. There is an understanding that happy researchers make good research and I definitely felt that here. It's very much encouraged in our group to have hobbies, to have something else to do. In Raleigh you have this open space but there's still this sort of cultural richness there. I really did like the blend that Raleigh has. It's right in between the downtown area, it's about a 10 minute drive away. And we have with that a great restaurant community, a great social life community, and of course because of RTP and our own Centennial Campus, what you'll find is one of the most vibrant, energized engineering campuses in the country. Centennial Campus is a research park. We don't just have academic units on campus, we have a number of industrial partners as well as the institutes that are located here. And that I think it's sort of indicative of the way NC State really functions to integrate engineering and industry. Whenever I visited Centennial Campus I saw all these facilities as well as their instrumentation. These are multi-million dollar instruments. There has been a very clear understating of the importance of having tools like this, to push the limits and really discover new ways of doing things. Recently our group has invested in several GPU clusters. That's really enabled us to look at much larger systems and get research that's much higher impact. Resources are kind of direct correlated to like how well you can study something. This investment has been made into the infrastructure. We are on a campus that is inherently young and fresh and youthful. The Material Science department here is really focused on creating good future researchers. As I've gone through the years at NC State, now I can see how the process works much better whether it be academia or industry. NC State is positioning itself as the innovation campus. They are putting people together that haven't worked together before, they are fostering inter-disciplinary collaborations and they are enabling us with unique resources. It's an environment you are not going to find anywhere else. In the time that I have been here, there's been this continual push to move forward and I think it really is a unique place to be and the right time to be here. We want to make sure that we are always considered to be in the very, very top group of departments that does world class science, world class engineering, produces world class students, is creating opportunities for our students to go wherever they want to go and do whatever they want to do.
