In this International Women’s Day special edition, Dr. Melissa Sterry speaks with Aurélie Fontan about her interdisciplinary practice at the intersection of couture, biomaterials and fashion technology. Central to Fontan’s approach is the idea that fashion design must shift from controlling materials to collaborating with living systems. Drawing on early experiments with kombucha SCOBY and other biological materials, she explores how biological fabrication can inform new approaches to textiles, colour systems and regenerative material processes within fashion. The conversation explores how new fashion materials emerge through interactions between biological organisms, craft practices, experimental design processes and the realities of fashion production systems. Further subjects discussed include the cultural influence of couture on wider fashion industries, the challenges of translating speculative biofashion into scalable material solutions and the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in developing new fashion supply chains. Key themes explored in the conversation include: Biodesign in fashion Living materials and couture Kombucha SCOBY textiles Craft and biological fabrication Biomaterials in fashion supply chains Open-source design experimentation Biofashion presentation formats Circular material systems Together, these themes highlight a growing shift in fashion from industrial production toward experimental design practices that engage biological processes, craft traditions and ecological thinking. BIOfutures In Conversation brings together leading researchers, designers and innovators working at the intersection of biotechnology, biomaterials and design. Hosted by Bioratorium®’s founder Dr. Melissa Sterry, the conversations explore emerging practices shaping bio-based futures and the evolving relationships between science, design and ecology.
