This video documents my ongoing work with this new freshwater "dirted tank," now 15 days after having set it up. I will publish another video at the 1 month mark to update you on how it is maturing. Since setting it up in the last video, I have: 1. added in leaf litter from the bottom of a local creek to begin to establish bacterial and fungal microorganisms that work to help cycle organic waste in the tank. 2. added in lots of ostracods (seed shrimp) to help clean the tank and as a food source for the backswimmers, etc. 3. noticed runners/roots beginning to form on the plants in the direction of the soil. 4. left the lights on 24/7 (recommended by Father Fish for 2 to 4 weeks for plant cuttings like this) 5. observed some algae growing on the glass (added another snail and more ostracods). I suspect that when I turn the light off at night, soon, and add a couple more snails and ostracods that the algae will subside. I may add a couple more water boatmen for this reason, too. 6. rested some paper towel on the surface of the tank for a few seconds to absorb some of the oily/bacterial film that had grown on it. In the next 2 weeks, I plan to: 1. add more leaf litter from local waterways to both introduce new microbes in the tank, and build up the number of hiding places for all tank residents 2. add more organisms to help build a healthy, balanced ecosystem 3. remove the water scorpions 4. add more ostracods, as needed 5. observe plant growth and turn the lights off during nighttime hours 6. additional steps to be determined as we go based on observations in the next 2 week period 7. retreat surface of water with paper towels to soak up any more biofilms To watch the set up video for this dirted tank from two weeks prior, click here: • Aquatic Insect Tank Set Up #aquarium #aqua...
