Speaker: Christian Peters, USDA-ARS, Supervisory Research Biologist / Research Leader What would it take for New England to provide 30 percent of its food needs from regional farms and fisheries? This session will dive into the results of Volume 2 of the New England Feeding New England project’s final report, which examines the region’s production potential. We will review estimates of the region’s current capacity to supply its own food and also discuss scenarios for how the region could supply 30 percent of its food. Special attention will be paid to how livestock products were considered in the analysis and how agricultural land use would need to change to meet the production targets considered in the scenarios. The session will wrap up by discussing implications of the study’s findings and nagging questions about the region’s food self-reliance that remain unresolved. This session was recorded at the 2024 Gathering of Good Graziers – Northeast Grazing & Livestock Conference, held January 25–27, 2024. The conference convened farmers, researchers, and agricultural professionals from across the Northeast to share knowledge and advance grazing-based livestock systems.
