I was working with Rob on ideas for the EP and we weren’t making much progress so decided to change things up and just have a free improv without trying to pressurise ourselves into making anything “good”. So that’s when the good thing happened. The whole track is pretty much as it happened at the time with the feeling of open expression and a musical conversation of some sort as we reacted to each other to form the emerging arrangement. For the video project with Dimitri Thouzery we chatted about forests as a visual counterpart for taking a moment out to be immersed in rich form. When I’m feeling stressed the forest is my favourite place to go. Dimitri collected 3D scans of nearby forest floor locations and told the story beautifully with a nod towards something greater than just the forests themselves. Thanks for having a look and a listen. Dimitri Thouzery When Max reached out to me to create a video project using the forest as a central theme, I was genuinely thrilled. It had been a while since I wanted to explore the human relationship with nature, approaching it though a digital interpretation. My comfort zone is to create generative art, but for this project, algorithms alone would have been insufficient. I saw it as an opportunity to immerse myself in nature; wander through local forests and search for the ideal natural elements to scan. Time and time again, I found myself fascinated by the intricacy and perfection tucked away in the smallest details. A magnified observation revealed a micro universe that became immense. It was a refreshing moment for me, stepping away from the screen and immersing myself in the complexity of the natural world. In many ways, it feels like a reflection of the track itself: taking a step aside from the hectic rhythm of our modern lives to observe our environment. From a technical point of view, I experimented with different scanning techniques to capture what I was seeing, from photogrammetry and point clouds to Gaussian splatting and 3D mesh reconstruction. Everything was then brought together and rendered using TouchDesigner. The digital, data-driven layer, built from numbers and vectors, became a way to express not only the themes of the video and the scans, but also our human obsession or even our need, to define, measure and categorise everything that surrounds us.
