Sir Lowry's pass: where beauty and history merge

The Sir Lowry's, approximately 55 km from Cape Townllis a mountain route cutting through the Hottentots Holland Mountains and distancing approximately at 55 km from Cape Town's city centre. The pass is about 400 meters above sea level and is one of the most dramatic backdrops in the Cape. It was known by the indigenous Khoi people as the Gantouw or Eland's Pass, and was used as a stock route. The first recorded European crossing was in 1664, and by 1821 the pass was seeing 4500 ox-wagons per year. The current pass was officially opened on the 6 July 1830 after 2 years of work and was named after Lowry Cole, the Governor of the Cape Colony at the time.
