I should of said that it was more than the water just surrounding the cables of the funnel that caused it to collapse. I didn't go into enough detail, when the water reached the base of the first funnel the water pressure began to act on it and caused it to move while it was submerging. The popular theory is that the outside water that was influencing the funnel and where the funnel wasn't flooded on the inside at the time it started to go under caused the funnel to try and float up and fall over. This in turn put more strain on the cables and support rivets at the base of the funnel and also helped accelerate the collapse.
