South Africa is a vast country with extended borders and a long coastline that made great demands of the SADF. This meant that the SADF had to operate in an area and not along a front. This required special attention to logistics, strategic and tactical mobility, the need for blanket cover, decentralization of excecution and a night-fighting capability. Operational doctrine is the meeting ground between the broad imperatives of stratergy and the steady maxims of tactics, where if there is a "native genius" it will express itself. Intellectuals in South African military uniform-their numbers are not small-are today world leaders in the development of operational doctrine. Proceeding from assumptions that the SADF would face a numerically superior force, an unfavorable air situation, and unwillingness of the superpowers to tolerate a long-term conventional war lest they be drawn into it, the officers offer up a paean to the "dynamic element of warefare," namely, maneuver. The South African Army, they aver, can win on any battlefield in southern Africa only "if it can move faster & fight more effectively" than its enemies. The topography, the infrastructure, the obstacles, and the distances of southern Africa provide the requisite operational space for maneuver warfare. Rare footage of the S.A.D.F out on maneuvers in the bush. Although not one of the biggest military forces of the time our 'Combat Power' was regarded as the best in Africa and was ranked amongst the top ten worldwide. Tracking combat power is the monitoring of a unit's status (equipment, personnel, and training) and location during deployment and before integration. Defining combat power for a unit needs to be broken into five subordinate pieces: a. combat capability by unit b. logistics capability by unit c. mobility-survivability d. C3I e. overall unit rating South African Special Forces. South African special forces were internationally considered to be among the best in the world, particularly in bush warfare. Their operational and fighting capabilities are world renowned, proven year in and year out during the country's 30 year long border/bush war in Angola as well as operating with the Rhodesian Special Forcces in Mozambique. In 1961, South Africa's first elite forces started with the formation of the Parabats. During the first few years of its existence, the Parabats were the only special forces of its time in the South African Defence Force, until the formation of the Recces and 32 Battalion. . The South African Special Forces Brigade (popularly known as Recces), established in 1972, then became the main Special Forces unit of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). This Regiment, was established to perform deep penetration and long range reconnaissance for the SADF. This unit was highly skilled and thier role was very different from the Parabats. These reconnaissance soldiers ("Recce" for short) were proficient in small group unconventional operations by sea, land and air, as well as urban and hostage situations of various kinds. Special forces operators were carefully selected and trained to gather covert strategic and tactical information about enemy activities. They learned how to observe silently, harass the enemy and destroy selected targets - all behind enemy lines. Frequently required to face great dread, they had to learn to control that fear in order to survive. These men were not assassins who eliminated spies in hotel rooms. They were responsible men who had a sense of integrity and served their country proudly.
