(26 May 1998) Indonesian/Nat Indonesia's new president B.J. Habibie on Tuesday toured areas of the capital Jakarta hardest hit by this month's riots. According to official figures more than 500 people died in a looting and arson spree in the weeks leading up to the resignation of former president Suharto after 32 years of autocratic rule. The rioting and looting has ended but now Indonesia must begin what will be a massive regeneration of the ailing economy. Areas of the capital, Jakarta, still resemble a war zone after demonstrations by thousands of students in the weeks before the resignation of former president Suharto. Officials say more than 500 people died in the looting and arson sprees and at least another 56 have been reported missing. On Tuesday the new president, B.J. Habibie took time to tour areas of the city worst hit by the riots. And the crowds gave him a warm welcome. Habibie shook hands with people in the crowd and addressed those gathered to see their new president. He was sworn in as president last Thursday after Suharto resigned, ending a 32-year authoritarian grip on power. The transfer of power to Habibie calls for him to serve out Suharto's term until 2003. Suharto quit after a wave of protests and riots earlier this month that were prompted by Indonesia's worst economic crisis in 30 years. So far, Habibie has bowed to demands for political and economic reforms. Also on Tuesday top Indonesian officials are expected to meet members of the International Monetary Fund who are due back in Jakarta. They fled Indonesia, along with thousands of other foreigners when violence began rocking the capital earlier this month.
