Skiing the Gardner and Rock Creek Headwalls along the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming and Montana. Skiing both of the routes along the Beartooth Highway is fairly straightforward and best done with two vehicles. For the Gardner Headwall, park one car at the Gardner Lake pullout and drive the other to the top of the hairpin turns. Hike 1/8 mile to the Headwall, ski down, hike out to your car at the Gardner Lake pullout, drive the hairpins up to retrieve your other car. For the Rock Creek Headwall, park one car at the base of the headwall on the Montana side of the highway, drive the other vehicle the Montana/Wyoming border where there is a small pullout, hike north to the Rock Creek Headwall, ski down, hike 1/8 mile back to the car at the base, drive back up to the border and retrieve your other car. This is a great introduction to backcountry skiing and a great way to spend a late spring morning.
