The possibilities of AI seem to be endless, and perhaps they are. But while AI can provide benefits beyond our wildest dreams, it also poses significant challenges, including very real risks to human rights. In this Connections episode, Laplink CEO Thomas Koll interviewed Jan Kleijssen, award-winning AI consultant and former director of Information and Action against Crime for the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe is Europe’s oldest political institution. Originally founded by Winston Churchill to prevent the recurrence of the horrors of WWII, the Council works tirelessly to protect human rights, rule of law, and democracy by way of internationally binding legal standards, or multilateral treaties. The Council of Europe recognized very early that the emergence of new technology would have a large impact on human rights and democracy, so it has made the topics of data security and cybercrime high-priority initiatives. After 40 years of service to the Council of Europe, Kleijssen continues to consult with various agencies on the topic of AI. In his interview with Thomas Koll, he discusses compelling arguments for regulation, such as the presence of automation bias, as Kleijssen stresses the need for human oversight, copyright laws, and large-scale testing of data sets — and ultimately, how legal recourse is necessary to prevent real human tragedy when something goes wrong.
