Former advisor to first lady Hillary Clinton Barbara Heineback says the punishment for a police officer charged over the death of George Floyd “must fit the crime”. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with third degree murder and second degree manslaughter after being filmed kneeling on 46-year-old George Floyd’s neck before his death. Ms Heineback told Sky News “murder three is not going to do anything to allow the community to become restful, it’s only going to exacerbate people”. “The punishment must fit the crime and too many police have gotten away with too much for too long and that does not help to bring about a peaceful resolve,” she said. Ms Heineback said US President Donald Trump was also exacerbating the situation in Minneapolis, where protests continue to rage over the death. In response to a tweet Mr Trump published which said “when the looting starts the shooting starts”, Ms Heineback said “there are so many times I wish he would just put a cork in it”. “It’s sad because he’s done a lot of good, more than anything else with the economy, but then he turns around and tweets something silly,” she said.
