The disability community is invited to hear directly from candidates for California’s next Governor about their commitment to people with disabilities and their vision for the future of vital services and supports. Join The Lanterman Coalition for "Keeping California’s Promise", a non-partisan candidate interview series focused on disability rights, the Lanterman Act, and California’s long-term commitment to the disability community. In this interview, we met with Tony Thurmond, candidate for California Governor, and California Superintendent of Public Instruction on Monday, February 23, 2026. The interview was conducted by Lanterman Coalition Co-Chairs: Barry Jardini, Executive Director, California Disability Services Association and Amy Westling, Executive Director, California Association of Regional Center Agencies, and joined by Nicole Adler, Human Rights Advocate and professional speaker. This statewide forum series asks every candidate the same questions about how they will protect and strengthen the promise of the Lanterman Act—a landmark civil rights law that guarantees services and supports for Californians with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In the face of federal changes and growing uncertainty, candidates will be asked how they plan to preserve California’s commitment to disability rights, essential services, dignity, and inclusion.
