In this video we look at the exhibition from our annual Bonsai Bash at Greenwood Bonsai Studio Enjoy CLOCKWISE FROM THE ENTRANCE (left hand side of studio) 1) Cedar of Lebanon - Cedrus libani. Originally grown from old nursery stock. Owned by Corin and subsequently styled several times over the years. It has had a recent re-style and change of front and re-potted into a Klika ceramic pot that harmonises with the bark texture. 2 ) Red Dissectum Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’. Bought in the early 1970’s as a young plant from Woolworths by Harry Tomlinson. Trained now for over 50 years in a pot as a bonsai. 20 years ago it blew off a bench and half of it snapped right off (scar on trunk) so has been re-grown since then by Corin. Potted into Chu-ming handmade Chinese bonsai pot. 3) Japanese Dogwood - Cornus kousa. Heavy trunk imported from Japan, an unusual and rare find. People mistake it for a Trident maple when not in leaf. It has exfoliating bark and off white colour flowers, followed by amazing Autumn colour. Hand finished Chinese Chu-ming bonsai pot. 4) Lace Leaf Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Koto no ito’ Having owned a smaller one of these amazing maples, when Corin found this larger specimen it was added to his collection. Bright green in Spring and a blaze of orange and red in Autumn. Planted into Chu-ming bonsai pot. 5) Turkey oak - Quercus cerris. UK grown for over 40 years, evident by the old bark. Grown slow, old school, with great movement, taper, and no large chop marks. Although it seems to have passed through a few hands in recent years, it is now here to stay. Planted in a specially selected Klika pot to match the bark. 6) Rough Bark Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Arakawa’ Imported from Japan and owned for over 8 years, recently potted into a vintage John Pitt pot, chosen as the glaze picks up the bark coloration. 7) Japanese Mountain Hemlock, Tsuga diversifolia. A recent addition here at Greenwood. A very rare tree in the UK, Corin has been trying to track one down for years. It has distinctive aged bark, a future show tree. In a vintage Japanese Yamaki pot. 8) Katsura Mountain Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Katsura’. A Japanese import, selected for its heavy trunk. A hard to find example of a Katsura which has bright orange leaf in Spring. This year planted into a lovely pot by Andreas Maeter from Austria. END DISPLAY - TOO MANY Shishigashira Maples ! LEFT - Shishigashira Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ Purchased as a neglected specimen 10 years ago at Trophy show in Belgium. Recently potted into a vintage Derek Aspinal pot. MIDDLE - Shishigashira maple, Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ After many years searching for a really impressive Shishigashira we were lucky enough to source and import this tree in 2024. Styling and refinement have just started and recently potted into a Shuho Hand made pot from Tokoname. ACCENT - Only the brave would use a Shishigashira to accent a Shishigashira! So we have! RIGHT - Shishigashira Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ Selected by Corin in Japan during the World Bonsai Convention in 2017. Pot is a handmade Yamaki Tokonome from Japan. 9) Japanese Mountain Maple - Acer palmatum. Hand selected for the outstanding Nebari this tree has. This year shown in a Bryan Albright Pot. 10) English oak - Quercus robur. This tree should need no Introduction at all. Styled by Harry Tomlinson and featured on the cover his best selling bonsai book. Book cover on display was in 1989. The tree died back after a hot summer and the tree you see now has been re-grown by Corin for nearly 20 years. Potted into a vintage Tokoname pot. I love the 11) Japanese Rough Bark Maple - Acer palmatum ‘Arakawa’ An interesting tree recently purchased at Trophy show, initially you couldn't see the rock, it was at the back of the tree ! Recently featured on our YouTube channel, so catch the video on there to see the transformation. 12) Ezo Spruce, Picea jezoensis. In a wood fired Chinese pot. Twin trunk styled by Corin over the last 12 years. Originally imported from Japan. 13) Golden Juniper - Juniperus plumosa ‘Aurea’ Created over 20 years by Corin, a tanuki (blend of live trees attached to a dead piece of driftwood) Potted into a John Pitt pot. 14) Trident maple - Acer buergerianum. Imported a few years ago from Japan, grown root over rock on Ibigawa. One of the best pieces of Ibigawa I’ve seen. Pot is a gas fired vintage Walsall Studio Ceramics. 15) Blue Atlas Cedar, Cedrus atlantica glauca. One of 6 Blue cedars that Corin imported from Italy to style around 8 years ago. Well matched into a John Pitt pot, that brings out the colour in the foliage. 16) Japanese Mountain Maple, Acer palmatum. Semi cascade bought to put in this wonderful Shuho vintage pot. Corin owned the pot first and eventually found a tree to match! We really hope you have enjoyed your visit today, and shared the beauty of bonsai with us. All the Best from the Greenwood team.
