This Cheap Copper Tape Completely Blocks Fiber Lasers!

This was never meant to be a laser blocking test… I originally bought this copper snail tape to test if it could mark for framing & alignment. Turns out it doesn’t work. But out of curiosity, I cranked up the power… and absolutely nothing happened. Somehow, this thin garden snail tape blocks the laser completely. Even my usual copper engraving settings won’t touch it. Could this be the cheapest and easiest way to mask off areas you don’t want engraved? For anyone wondering why this cheap snail tape blocks a fibre laser, here’s the deal: This stuff is actually real copper foil, usually around 30–40 microns thick. Copper is one of the most reflective metals at the 1064 nm wavelength that fibre lasers use — it reflects around 95% of the beam. So instead of absorbing energy like stainless or brass might, it just throws the beam back. Even if you crank the power, the copper spreads the heat super fast across the surface because of its high thermal conductivity. And since the foil’s so thin, there’s no mass to hold the heat long enough to ablate or oxidise properly. If it’s clean and shiny, it’s even harder to touch. That’s why copper is notoriously difficult to mark with a standard fibre laser unless you: • pre-oxidise the surface, • coat it with something dark (e.g. black Sharpie or spray), • or use a MOPA laser dialled in for dark annealing. Surprisingly effective for snail defence and laser resistance.
