Fearing violence during the arrests, some 1,500 troops were deployed at the headquarters of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). The group has a long record of torching buildings of rival groups, vandalising nightspots seen as un-Islamic and hurling stones at Western embassies. One local resident told AP television the raid had made him feel safer, adding that before he was "worried that chaos might happen". National police spokesman Abubakar Nataprawira said some of those detained early on Wednesday were suspects in a weekend attack on a rally attended by hundreds of Christians, moderate Muslims and members of the minority sect, Ahmadiyah. At least 12 people were injured in Sunday's violence, four of them seriously. FPI leader Rizieq Shihab, who was not arrested, addressed the crowd and called on the group's supporters not to resist the police raid. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has condemned Sunday's attack and told ministers to examine options for banning the FPI.
