This is a master ranking list taken from my TikTok series ranking various instances of incest in modern media. Not all of these cases are depictions of actual technical incest, but rather examples of when both a familiar and romantic bond have been established between two or more characters. Most of the time, one of these connections was not needed, and added solely for an ineffective shock-value or to create a tragic backstory that is them poorly explored. I am nit trying to discourage depictions of difficult topics in media, but rather trying to show the overuse of this one. Incest is used as a gag, as a shock reveal, as a scape-goat, as a way to trick viewers into supporting something disturbing. There are many cases on this list that do explore an incestuous relationship with a critical and understanding eye, and I try to give them credit where earned. But the majority fall flat. Why is there such an overuse of incest in media? It’s not something I’ve managed to figure out yet. But the overuse is present, the fascination clear, and the lack of sensitivity obvious.
