The Making of a Kammavācā Manuscript from Myanmar

Trent Walker (Stanford University, Ho Center for Buddhist Studies) discusses the production of a Burmese Kammavācā (pronounce: ‘ka-ma-wa-jah’) manuscript on loan from the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. The Kammavācā is a highly ornamental book, made of cloth, gold, pigments, and lacquered to a shiny finish. This one is used in the Buddhist ordination ceremony for new monks entering the monastery within the Theravāda tradition in Myanmar. The exhibition Hidden Stories: Books Along the Silk Roads, held at the Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, explores the books, scrolls, manuscript paintings, and textiles that shaped — not just documented — life along one of history’s most important trade networks and beyond. The exhibition (October 2021 - February 2022) was co-curated by Filiz Çakır Phillip (Aga Khan Museum) and Suzanne Conklin Akbari (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton) and developed in collaboration with the Book and the Silk Roads Project at the University of Toronto.
