Johann Wilhelm Hässler, Fantasia in C Minor (C. 1776). Performed by Christophe Rousset on Harpsichord Johann Wilhelm Hässler (1747-1822), not to be confused with Hans Leo Hassler, was a classical period composer and keyboardist from modern-day Germany. He went on many tours from the 1770s up to the 1790s. He met many composers on his travels, including C.P.E Bach and even Mozart, who he dueled in an organ and piano composition in 1789. Hässler moved to Moscow in 1794, where he focused less on performance and more on teaching and composition. He would stay in Moscow until his death in 1822. Hässler’s most well-known piece is his Grand Gigue in D minor, Op. 31. Like most of his published work, it was for keyboard. Hässler composed many sonatas, fantasias, and preludes for keyboard instruments. This fantasia is part of a set of 6 sonatas published by Schwickert in 1776. There was no modern score of the fantasia, so I engraved it myself! I made it based on Schwickert's 1776 score and a manuscript dating to 1780. You can find both scores in the description. Christophe Rousset is a French harpsichordist and conductor who specializes in Baroque music and is also a musicologist of 17th—and 18th-century music. He performed and recorded the music of Francois Couperin, Scarlatti, Rameau, J.S. Bach, Royer, and many other baroque composers.
