Once it reaches the lungs, it can be exhaled as carbon dioxide. ➡️ Bicarbonate Overview Bicarbonate, or Bicarb for short, is abbreviated and also known as HCO3. It's a byproduct of the body's metabolism. Bicarb travels in blood to the lungs where it can be exhaled as carbon dioxide. In fact, approximately 80% of the total CO2 in the blood is transported as bicarbonate. The kidneys play a role in the regulation of bicarb which helps maintain the body's pH or acid-base balance. Bicarb is one of the most important fluid anions and is a strong base that helps maintain homeostasis within the body. ➡️ Measuring Bicarb Bicarbonate levels can be measured as part of an electrolyte panel along with sodium, potassium, and chloride. It can also be obtained via an arterial blood gas (ABG) where a sample of arterial blood is collected and analyzed.
