The Asian giants of hockey, India and Pakistan, retained their supremacy in the third World Cup hockey tournament -- it ended in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (15 March) with India and Pakistan contesting the final, after upsetting the recent supremacy of European teams. Pakistan dominated the early stages of the final, and scored the first goal through Mohamed Saeed. Then tragedy struck when Pakistan left winger Samiullah fractured his left collar bone in a fall. After that, the Pakistan attack lost its penetration. Surjit Singh scored the equalizer for India following a short corner early in the second half. The winning goal fell to India -- though the Pakistanis claimed that Kumarihat's shot, which hit a post and trickled along the line, was not a goal. The start of the third World Cup hockey final on Saturday -- with India, playing right to left and wearing the light shirts, taking on their traditional rivals, Pakistan. Pakistan started the match as favorites, and dominated the early stages of the final. Their attack had been particularly impressive throughout the tournament, relying on two fine wingers. Pakistan's most convincing win on the way to the final was a five-nil trouncing of European champions, Spain. Pakistan's early domination paid off with a first half goal by Mohamed Saeed to put them into the lead. In reaching the final, Pakistan and India had succeeded in breaking the recent stranglehold on world hockey by European teams. West Germany won the 1972 Olympics, and the Netherlands won the World Cup the following year. But in this year's tournament the best placed European team finished third--West Germany, who beat the home side Malaysia four-nil in the play-off. In the final, Pakistan looked on their way to a comfortable victory when tragedy struck, and one of their wingers--Samiullah--was carried off with a broken collar bone following a heavy fall. This upset enabled India to get back onto terms during the second half. Surjit Singh scored India's equaliser following a short corner. India's winner came from a dispute goal, when Kumarihat hit the post. The Pakistanis claimed the ball never crossed the goal line.
