When Steve was just a scrawny kid trying to see if he can get a 4F from every recruiting office on the East Coast Bucky looked after his plucky pal including when his sense of right and wrong would find him on the receiving end of a rather one sided beating. Barnes would eventually get his orders and, as a courtesy to Steve, decided to take all the stupid with him to keep Steve out of trouble. That was before Steve went from simp to supersoldier and eventually joined the war he kept volunteering for and fought side by side with his old pal until they both wound up on ice in their own special ways that would lead to them facing each other as foes. Turns out it was a bad idea to send your programmed assassin to kill the one person that can form a personal connection to your programmed assassin. Soon Bucky and Steve were reconciling even if it cost them the existence of the Avengers. All was forgiven for the star spangled man with the plan and his gloomier pal when they were able to team up with literally everybody to bring down Thanos and bring back the half of everyone that had vanished. At the end of that adventure the century old Captain America decided he had earned a retirement, but how much of that plan did Bucky know?
