Hugelkultur is a German word meaning hill culture or hill mound. It is a no till/ no dig method for raised bed gardening. Permaculture gardening in Canada makes for a great homestead to build a hugelkultur on. We have lots of rotting logs and biomass on our property to build the hugel mound. The plan for our homestead is to practice methods of permaculture gardening and no dig gardening as much as we can. This is the first part of the hugel mound build that will be completed next spring. We have the logs in place so they will rot over the winter and when we put compost and soil over them in the Spring, the logs will release nutrients and retain water. Dominic builds his first hugelkultur / hugel mound in this video. There are some detailed timelapse to follow along but basically it is: lay our bed frame with old logs fill frames with rotting wood from the property, cover in compostable material, in this case: fallen leaves. In the Spring we will cover this with compost, dirt and then plant vegetables on our hugelkultur no dig no till bed. *** I hope you enjoy this vlog, this is turning into a homestead family youtube channel // homestead vlog channel so I hope you are ok with that.
