Philippines - Japanese Soldier Returns

(21 May 1996) T/I: 10:23:52 FE: 10:08:09 A Japanese soldier who continued to fight for 29 years after the end of World War II has returned on a journey of peace to the Philippine island where he was based. Hiroo Onoda, a 74-year old former Japanese imperial army officer, said could only know what peace was about when he returned to Lubang, a tiny island in Occidental Mindoro. On his return, Onoda was welcomed by the local Filipino population, many of who had lost relatives to the Japanese military in World War 2. The welcome was warm, with people saying that a long time had passed and forgiveness was necessary. He was sent Lubang, 125 km (75 miles) south west of Manila, in December 1944 with orders to spy on the US military. Onoda was so successful in hiding that he did not realise that the war had ended until 1974, when he surrendered to the then Philippines' President, Ferdinand Marcos.
