Marvel Super Hero Island is located in Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure park in Orlando, Florida and is themed after popular Marvel Comics superheroes. The area opened in 1999 when the Islands of Adventure park opened,. Originally Marvel Super Hero Island was to be a DC Comics Superhero land until those rights were acquired by Six Flags. Universal then negotiated with Marvel Entertainment to create a Marvel Universe area with the license to run indefinitely. The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 and honored the previous contract Universal had with Marvel Entertainment. Disney has their own Marvel area, Avengers Campus, with themed Marvel rides, however, the terms of the previous agreement mean Walt Disney World can not use characters featured in Universal's Marvel Super Hero Islands in certain areas, which is why Avengers Campus is not at Walt Disney World, but features in other Disney Resorts such as California and Paris. Walt Disney World does have Guardians of The Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind as these characters are not at Universal. Marvel Super Hero Islands consists of 4 attractions: Doctor Doom's Fearfall an S&S Power space shot ride opened in 1999 Storm Force Accelatron a Mack Rides teacup attraction opened in 2000 The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman an Oceaneering International 3D Dark Ride opened in 1999 The Incredible Hulk Coaster, a Bolliger & Mabillard launched roller coaster opened in 1999 The area also has Marvel themed dining, Marvel merchandise and meet and greets. Universal's Islands of Adventure, also known as Islands of Adventure or simply IOA, was originally called Universal Studios Islands of Adventure and is a theme park located in Orlando, Florida. It opened on May 28, 1999, along with Universal CityWalk, as part of an expansion that converted Universal Studios Florida into the Universal Orlando Resort. Islands of Adventure is split into eight Islands, It originally opened with just six, with two more Islands added later. The resort is operated by Universal Parks & Resorts, and is the second-largest resort in Greater Orlando, after nearby Walt Disney World Resort. Universal Orlando consists of two theme parks, Universal Studios Florida which opened on June 7th 1990 and Universal's Islands of Adventure which opened on May 28th 1999 There is also a waterpark, Volcano Bay, which opened on May 25th 2017.
