Video link • How to change time expressions and questio... Indirect speech In this lesson, I look at how we use the verb ‘to wish’. Have you ever wished for something that seemed impossible? The Subjunctive/Unreal Past We use the verb "to wish" when we find ourselves imagining a situation which we would like to happen.. Example: "I wish I were a superhero." (Even though I'm not, I dream of being one.) Journeying through tenses: Past, Present, and Future Wishes Wishes are not only made in the present tense; they can be expressed in the past and future as well. Example: "I wish I had studied harder for the exam." (Thinking about a past regret) Example: "I wish I could speak fluent French." (Expressing a present desire) Example: "I wish I could travel the world one day." (Dreaming of a future adventure) "If Only" For something stronger and emotional, we can use "if only" to express our deepest longings and regrets. Example: "If only I had listened to your advice, I wouldn't be in this situation." (Expressing regret about a past decision) Example: "If only I could fly, I would explore the skies." (Dreaming of a Harry Potter ability) For more help with your English grammar, please subscribe to my channel Splendid English grammar and ring that bell for notifications of new videos. Thanks.
