Śrīmad Bhāgavatam CANTO 4 Chapter Sixteen – Praise of King Pṛthu by the Professional Reciters In this chapter of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (Canto 4), the professional reciters continue glorifying King Pṛthu, recognizing him as a śaktyāveśa-avatāra — a specially empowered incarnation of the Supreme Lord. After witnessing his deep humility in the previous chapter, the reciters become even more inspired to describe his divine qualities. They declare that King Pṛthu is directly empowered by Lord Viṣṇu to re-establish religious principles and protect the citizens. In ISKCON understanding, this shows how the Lord empowers qualified devotees to act as His representatives on earth. The reciters describe Pṛthu as an ideal king — just like the sun distributes light equally, he will distribute mercy equally. He will collect taxes like the sun evaporates water, and return prosperity like rain in the proper season. He will be tolerant like the earth, powerful like fire, deep like the ocean, and impartial in justice — even punishing his own son if necessary. A true Vaiṣṇava leader, as described here, respects brāhmaṇas, protects women as mothers, serves devotees humbly, and sees all living beings equally. King Pṛthu will “milk the earth” to provide abundance for all citizens and perform one hundred aśvamedha sacrifices. Later, he will receive spiritual knowledge from Sanat-kumāra, showing that even the greatest king remains eager to hear transcendental wisdom. This chapter teaches that real leadership means service, dharma, compassion, strength, and devotion to Krishna. Through King Pṛthu’s example, we learn that governance must be rooted in spiritual principles, not personal ambition.
