http://www.roomtoread.org After launching the Let Girls Learn Initiative, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama traveled to Siem Reap, Cambodia to learn more about community-driven solutions to girls' education--solutions like Room to Read's Girls' Education Program (http://www.roomtoread.org/girlseducat.... She also wanted to hear the stories of some of the girls in the program to better understand what kinds of challenges these girls face on a daily basis. These are the "behind the headlines" stories of Phounam and Sohang-- two amazing girls fighting to finish their education who had the opportunity to share their story with the First Lady of the United States as well as the First Lady of Cambodia Bun Rany. They are smart, driven and they have big dreams. Sohang wants to become a math teacher and Phounam wants to become a doctor. However, they are from a poor community where girls usually drop out around grade 6. The villagers tell them they are aiming too high. With mentoring and support from Room to Read, and encouragement from family members and each other, Phounam and Sohang found the courage and determination they needed to stay in school. And now Michelle Obama joins the voices of those congratulating their perseverance thus far and challenging them to continue and to ignore anyone who says they can't do it.
