High School Student Charged After Child Hit Walking to Bus

HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A Hendersonville teen has been charged in a hit-and-run incident involving a stopped school bus Tuesday morning. Jonah Wesley VanDoren, 17, is charged with Felony Hit and Run resulting in injury and Felony Passing a Stopped School Bus striking a person. According to police, VanDoren was turning right from Browning Avenue onto Haywood Road as the school bus was stopped, loading children around 7:45 a.m. VanDoren passed the bus and in doing so, struck a 12-year-old Hendersonville Middle School student, knocking him to the ground. Police say another student was struck, but not knocked down and did not go to the hospital. Police say VanDoren then left the scene and continued to West Henderson High School, where he turned himself in to his principal. Sgt. Brandon McGaha with the Hendersonville Police Department spoke with the teen after he turned himself in. "He was upset," Sgt. McGaha said. "Very cooperative, very friendly. He was scared. He was just upset at the whole situation." The injured student was taken to Pardee Hospital by his mother where he is currently being treated for minor injuries. Police say the 12-year-old boy suffered bruises to his leg and wrist and maybe a sprain. Neighbor Curt Valentine says the scene of the incident is a dangerous intersection. "You can't hardly see both ways," Valentine said. Before leaving the scene, VanDoren's stepmom says he checked on the boy who was knocked down. She says the middle school student said he was fine and got on the bus. Police confirm this, but add the bus didn't leave, so VanDoren shouldn't have moved. "[He] shouldn't have driven away," Sgt. McGaha said. "You're required in North Carolina if you hit a car or person, you're required to stop in North Carolina." VanDoren is currently at the Henderson County Detention Center under a $6,000 secured bond. Sgt. Mcgaha says VanDoren's charges could change, but that would be up to the DA.
