See Lebron James using the Crabwalk feature in this Hummer EV. The GMC Hummer EV’s CrabWalk feature is aptly named. It allows all four wheels to be turned in the same direction up to a 10-degree angle, and when the driver hits the throttle, the vehicle will move diagonally — just how a crab walks. Why Is It Helpful? The most likely use of the four-wheel-steering feature is to turn the rear wheels opposite the fronts to tighten the vehicle’s turning circle at low speeds, which makes it feel more maneuverable. According to the Hummer EV’s specifications, engaging four-wheel steering — done through a console button — can reduce the turning circle by more than 7 feet on the pickup (from 44.3 feet to 37.1, the latter about the same as that of a Honda CR-V compact SUV) and nearly 10 feet on the shorter SUV (45.3 feet to 35.4). Holding the same button down for a few seconds engages CrabWalk, after which the driver turns the steering wheel to dial in the degree of tire angle desired. Although the rear wheels will only turn up to 10 degrees in either direction, the fronts can be turned past that to full lock — though the resulting movement will be an arc rather than a diagonal. Four-wheel steering is a notable feature of the Hummer EV because while the pickup is about 15 inches shorter than GMC’s full-size Sierra crew cab, it’s still a big vehicle. Although GMC videos demonstrating the CrabWalk feature show both on-road and off-road scenarios where it could come in handy, a GMC spokesperson indicated it’s probably most useful in off-road driving. It’s one of several features — including the ability to summon up to a whopping 16 inches of ground clearance in Extract Mode — aimed at making the Hummer EVs real beasts in the dirt. History The Hummer EV is not the first GMC to offer four-wheel steering. From model-years 2002-05, Quadrasteer four-wheel steering was offered on select GMC Sierra full-size pickups and Yukon XL full-size SUVs.
