We lost Tony Scott nearly 8 years ago as of this posting. We wanted to take a moment to remember one of the most creative and brilliant auteur directors whose films have left a lasting mark on us and our culture. Tony Scott's films are a genre of their own. Tony got his start directing commercials thanks to his brother, Ridley. There he developed an eye for visual hooks and knew how to create images that had depth. But it wasn't long before Tony made the jump to feature films as well. His unique eye for color, light, camera movement, and editing techniques made his films instantly stand out from the rest. He also knew how to utilize score, and you can tell that from his lasting collaboration with Harry Gregson-Williams as well as other composers he worked with early on in his career like Hans Zimmer and others. Tony's films also had something that most action filmmakers didn't know how to develop, and that was character and emotion. While his films had gravitas and an indulgence for the bombastic, they always had grounded characters with big emotional payoffs. If you watched our recent Scene Study for Man On Fire, you will have already seen this tribute montage. But in honor of Tony on the anniversary of his passing, we thought it would be nice to post this tribute so it can stand on its own. Hopefully this montage captures the bold and big energy that was Tony Scott's personality. Hopefully it highlights many of his visual trademarks. And hopefully it triggers an urge to go back and watch some of his films, whether you've lost count how many times you've seen them or if you're discovering them for the first time.
