This webinar is a digital presentation offered as part of our ongoing webinar series. In this webinar, Jay W. Henry of the Utah Crime Laboratory discusses the contents and importance of a sexual assault kit (SAK). Jay Henry is the Director for the Utah Department of Public Safety crime laboratory system with responsibilities that include operations, training, curriculum development, budget and legislative advocacy. For the last ten years, he has lead Utah’s only “full-service” forensic science provider which is composed of three laboratories with 55 employees and serves 140+ law enforcement agencies with a population base of approximately 2.8 million people. He has worked for the department for twenty eight years. Early in his career, Jay worked both as a serologist and DNA analyst processing biological evidence recovered from sexual assault and other crimes against a person. In 1994, he and other colleagues testified at the legislature to help establish the Combined DNA Indexing System (CODIS) database statute for the State of Utah. In recent years, he has been involved in the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) and has made presentations both locally and nationally. Jay also continues to train and maintain an active interest in casework which includes crime scene, firearms, ballistics and reconstructive aspects of criminal events. He maintains casework proficiency in Firearms and Tool Mark analysis. Mr. Henry is certified by the American Board of Criminalistics and holds memberships in the Northwest Association of Forensic Scientists (NWAFS), American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) and the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD). He has served in various capacities within these organizations including President of the Northwest Association of Forensic Scientists (2002) and is a Past President of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (2013). Anyone wishing to learn more about sexual assault kits and their importance in the criminal justice process is invited to take this certificate course.
