The Chords: I7 and IV7 In the key of A Major Blues, the two primary chords you mentioned are: The I7 (First Degree): A7 (A Dominant 7th) Notes: A - C# - E - G This is your "home" chord. The addition of the Minor 7th (G) to the A Major triad creates that bluesy grit. The IV7 (Fourth Degree): D7 (D Dominant 7th) Notes: D - F# - A - C In a 12-bar blues, moving from the I7 to the IV7 is the first major shift in the progression. 2. The Scales: Pentatonic vs. Blues To solo over these chords, we use specific scales. The most important distinction is between the standard Pentatonic and the "Blues Scale." The Major Pentatonic Scale This scale sounds bright and sweet. Formula: 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 - 6 A Major Pentatonic: A - B - C# - E - F# The Minor Pentatonic Scale This is the foundation of the Blues sound. Even though the chords are Major (Dominant), we play the Minor Pentatonic over them to create "blue notes." Formula: 1 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b7 A Minor Pentatonic: A - C - D - E - G The Blues Scale (The "Penta-Blues") The Blues scale is simply the Minor Pentatonic with one extra note: the diminished 5th (b5), also known as the "Blue Note." Formula: 1 - b3 - 4 - b5 - 5 - b7 A Blues Scale: A - C - D - Eb - E - G Note: The Eb is the "secret sauce." It provides the tension and chromatic "slurring" sound that defines the genre. 3. Application: Playing over the I7 and IV7 When you are playing a 12-Bar Blues: Over the I7 (A7): You can use the A Minor Blues scale for a "dirty" sound or the A Major Pentatonic for a "sweeter" BB King style. Over the IV7 (D7): You can continue using the A Minor Blues scale (which works over the whole progression) or shift your focus to emphasize the notes of the D7 chord. #BassBackingTrack #NoBass #BluesScale #PentatonicScale #A7D7 #I7IV7 #FunkSoul #BassPractice #BassImprovisation #BluesTheory #PentaBlues #BlueNote #80BPM #BassLesson #SoulBlues #MusicTheory #JamTrack #BassGroove
