SOUNDBITE: (English) Stevo Pendarovski, Macedonian Interior Ministry spokesman: "Unfortunately yesterday was a very bad incident for us. We had a classical ambush. Our police patrol was actually caught in an ambush about 8 pm local time, and after that we were fired on by mortars, by machine guns and by rocket launchers. Three of our policemen were wounded, fortunately for all of us only slightly, and they are going to be released today, I believe, from the hospital." 11. Macedonian soldier searching damaged building STORYLINE: The Macedonian army allowed journalists to accompany its troops as they entered a village recently deserted by Albanian rebels whom they have been fighting. It's the first time since a lull in the skirmishes that the media has been allowed to film the aftermath of fighting in the area near Kumanovo in Macedonia. The area was quiet on Wednesday after clashes that lasted late into Tuesday evening. Refugees from the region spoke of a raid on their village on Monday by black-clad government troops flown in by helicopter. Macedonia's security council reviewed the crisis late on Tuesday and decided that talking to the militants remained out of the question. The government has long insisted that the rebels are terrorists bent on annexing a piece of the country and uniting it with Albania or Kosovo. The clashes followed tentative gains made by the army in clashes with insurgents in northern villages, where thousands of civilians remain trapped as the army continues its offensive.
