How to color Fire, Flames and Smoke with colored pencils - tutorial

I have drawn this illustration originally for my patrons on Patreon and then I remembered somebody had asked me to create a tutorial on how to color flames and smoke. So here it comes together with a kettle with flames reflections on it! (If you like this coloring page, it's an exclusive one for my Patreon members only till the end of the month October 2024 here:   / october-2024-113132193   Later on I will include this image in one of my future coloring books) I used Prismacolor Premier colored pencils. You can use any other brand and just find similar colors. FIRE FLAMES: Start with the lightest yellow colors - from the bottom and the center of the flames. The orange and red tones are going to be more on the top and edges of the flames. Cream 914 Lemon Yellow 915 Sunburst Yellow 917 Yellowed Orange 1002 Orange 918 Scarlet Lake 923 Canary Yellow 916 and Yellow Chartreuse 1004 CAULDRON: Black Grape 996 Dahlia Purple 1009 Blend the purple colors with Greyed Lavender 1026 but leave out the yellow reflections! Flames reflections: Orange 918, Sunburst Yellow 917 Blend the reflections with White and Yellow Chartreuse 1004 - be careful to clean the tip of the pencil from the surrounding purple colors. SMOKE: 50% Warn Grey 1054 20% Cool Grey 1060 Beige 997 Blend with White Add a little bit of the background colors on the smoke - that will help to add transparency. Blend with White again. Cover the outlines of the smoke with a white pen, I used Posca. You can add some white dots aka sparks :) We're done!
