This little surgical wisdom that can save you and your ZooMed (exotics) patients from unnecessary drama—avoiding cecal injuries during abdominal incisions! Let’s spread the surgical wisdom! 🩺 Did you know that a small incision heals just as quickly as a big one? So why not keep it large enough to allow better visualization? Here’s another go-to trick: I place two stay sutures on either side of the linea alba, just grabbing a bit of the muscle. This way, I can lift the body wall and make my stab incision without getting too close to that sneaky cecum! 🛡️ Remember, the body wall is super thin in rabbits! Once you make that incision, be sure to protect those internal organs. I like to use my finger or a surgical instrument to act as a barrier between my scissors and those delicate structures—especially the cecum! 💪 By taking these extra steps, you’ll be reducing the chances of cecal mishaps and ensuring a smooth recovery for your patients.
