Introduction to the lecture begins at 6:25 Originally published in 2006, McKenzie Wark’s Gamer Theory remains one of the deepest explorations of ways that video games fit into the culture of the 21st century. As one of the pre-eminent critical theorists of her generation Wark examined how video games reflected back to their players the economic, cultural, and ultimately algorithmic, forces that led the overdeveloped world to cast itself in the image of a ‘gamespace’. Join us for a discussion with Prof. Wark that looks back on Gamer Theory with 15 years of hindsight, places the book within her larger body of work, and connects it to both the contemporary video game industry and the ‘death of capitalism’. NOTE: We apologize for the audio issues in this lecture recording. Please understand that this was our first hybrid in person/live-streamed lecture in our space at 370 Jay Street.
