Find Out Now: https://www.mamanatural.com/baby-blues/ You just brought home your dream newborn baby, and you went from feeling over the moon to down in the dumps. Why the sudden change?! And why are you crying over every little thing? In this video I will be talking about a very common occurrence called the Baby Blues. I’ll share how to distinguish it from postpartum depression and the top natural and effective ways to get an emotional boost. What Are the Baby Blues? Baby blues, or postpartum blues, are feelings of sadness or loneliness that 80% of mamas deal with after giving birth. Doesn’t that make you feel better that you’re among such great company? What Do the Baby Blues Feel Like, you may ask? They actually are not just sad feelings; The blues come in “multiple colors.” Common feelings include: Crying over nothing, like putting a diaper on backwards or your shirt on inside out Irritability toward others Feeling overwhelmed Feel trapped inside, or feeling touched-out from the demands of a newborn and breastfeeding Paranoia about baby’s safety, such as the fear of dropping the baby, constantly telling everyone to be more careful, or obsessively checking the baby’s breathing. Trouble sleeping when you finally get the chance. Searching for words and difficulty focusing. Loss of appetite and rapid weight change Or having a panic attack. All of these feelings or episodes can fall under Baby Blues. They usually begin around 2 to 3 days after birth but pass on their own, usually within the first month postpartum. While you may occasionally have some of these feelings over the course of baby’s first year, they are definitely the most intense in early postpartum. However, if you have super intense feelings that last longer than a month or so, you may need to consider that you are struggling with postpartum depression. PPD can manifest as: the inability to function the lack of interest in or resentment toward baby an intense sadness, anxiety, guilt, irritability, rage, or hopelessness. insomnia or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby If you experience unwelcome thoughts of harming yourself or baby, then you need to get immediate help. Talk to a doctor ASAP or call 1-800-PPD-MOMS. Why does all this emotional strife happen to us poor, new moms? Researchers aren’t totally sure what causes the baby blues, but it makes sense that a woman who just endured dramatic physical and emotional changes would experience some aftershocks. Contributing factors are: Regulation of hormones Changes in the maternal brain Sleep deprivation, because, let’s face it, you aren’t YOU when you’re tired. Lack of nutrition because of being so busy and eating on the go. Or overall depletion if breastfeeding Stress from the major life changes And lastly, placenta consumption can sometimes backfire. This happened to me: instead of a boost, I just got more blue. Weird. Once I stopped taking my placenta pills, it went away. Do you want to feel better, happier, more like yourself? Here are my Top Ways to that may soothe those baby blues: Let Food Be Thy Medicine: Eat rich omega-3 foods, like salmon, walnuts, chia seeds, avocado, and cod liver oil, which are literally healing balm to the brain. Eat foods rich in B12 which can boost mood and energy. Foods like clams, beef liver, swiss cheese, or fortified brewer’s yeast for vegans out there. Depression is linked to low vitamin D levels. Boost your intake by eating full-fat yogurt, grass-fed beef, eggs, and of course good ol’ sunshine. . Get Moving! In one study, depressed patients found that daily exercise was more effective than medications to try their condition. Let there be light! Without enough sunlight exposure, your serotonin levels can dip. And low levels of serotonin are associated with a higher risk for depression. Acupuncture to the rescue! Believe it or not, some studies suggest acupuncture provides more mood-boosting relief than medication. Get more sleep. Easier said than done, right? But, when we are running on sleep deprivation our moods will be all over the place. Let me pause here to share my dirty secrets for more sleep. Sleep when baby sleeps. (Yes, this is a cliché, but it’s golden advice. Chores can wait!) Go to bed earlier… I found as early at 8/8:30 was so helpful and necessary Stop drinking caffeinated drinks or chocolate after lunch And avoid blue light/screens before bed, which will shut down melatonin, the sleep hormone, production Drink tart cherry juice, which contains naturally occurring melatonin and can help you sleep like a baby Lastly, HUMAN CONNECTION. Ask for help from family and friends, whether it is for meals or babywatching so you can get a good shower or take a solid nap.
