When South Australia was first founded as a free colony in 1836, it was thought there would be no need for a prison. However, that optimism was short-lived and five years later, Adelaide Gaol became one of the colony’s very first buildings. In this video, Education Officer Maddy from the Department of Environment and Water walks us through the gaol’s origins, from the construction saga that nearly derailed it, to the archaeological dig that revealed artefacts hidden beneath its floors. Preserved with the support of the South Australian Government, Adelaide Gaol stands today as a layered record of the state’s early years.
