Oniiwa Park is a park that spans across Mitake Town and Mizunami City in Gifu Prefecture. It is part of the Hida-Kiso River Quasi-National Park, and it is a scenic spot where you can see huge rocks and strange stones made of granite. It is also designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument. The flowers and autumn leaves are beautiful throughout the seasons, and there are also valleys and waterfalls. Nearby, there is a radium hot spring called Oniiwa Onsen. The origin of Oniiwa (literally, “demon rock”) is based on the following legend. About 800 years ago, there was a demon named Seki no Taro who lived in this rocky mountain and caused trouble to the nearby villagers and travelers. A warrior named Kogoe Gen’gonoyasu came to slay the demon by the order of Emperor Go-Shirakawa. The demon asked for help from Kannon (the goddess of mercy), but Kannon said, “I will forgive you if you can build a castle by dawn.” The demon exerted all his strength to start building the castle, but Kannon imitated the crowing of a rooster to make it look like the night was over. The demon thought he had run out of time and threw away the stone he was carrying and ran away. The stone he carried had five finger marks on it. The villagers called this stone Oniiwa and enshrined Kannon and Jizo (the guardian of children and travelers) in the five holes. #japan #walking #nature #countryside
