I have grave concern for the stories, for those I read about in the stories who put their life savings aside and for whatever reason, based upon some rule or regulation, got trapped in this awful bankruptcy and lost their life savings. And one of the things this group is going to do is take a good hard look at it." APTN - Houston, Texas - November 29, 2001 7. Various Enron workers walking out of building STORYLINE: United States President George Bush has ordered his economic team Thursday to review pension and company disclosure rules that could jeopardize workers' life savings. The politically charged action came one day after the U-S Justice Department opened criminal investigation into Enron Corporation, an energy company whose bankruptcy wiped out the savings of many of its workers. Enron's top officials, including Kenneth L. Lay, the chief executive officer, are financial supporters of Bush. The Center for Public Integrity says that Bush received U.S. dlrs 146,500 from Enron executives during his two races for Texas governor, with Lay responsible for dlrs 122,500 of the total. Enron directors and employees have given dlrs 623,000 to Bush during his political career, the center adds. Lay was one of Bush's "Pioneers" who raised at least dlrs 100,000 for the candidate during the presidential campaign. Lay contributed to the Florida recount and gave dlrs 100,000 to the Bush Inaugural. The White House disclosed on Thursday that Lay was in contact with top administration officials while his company was collapsing last fall. Bush said the Enron case shed light on potential problems in the nation's pension system. A senior Bush adviser said the president wants to protect workers' pensions as well as inoculate himself against mounting criticism for his administration's association with Lay and Enron. The president told reporters after his Oval Office announcement that he had never discussed with Lay the finances of Enron. Bush said he last talked to Lay in the spring, and said Lay also had attended a White House meeting with business leaders early in his term. A senior official involved in discussions on the issue said the Justice Department will determine whether Enron broke any laws and the Treasury Department will study whether Enron's conduct, although potentially legal, exposed loopholes in the system. Investors were unable to pull their money out of Enron stocks while the company was collapsing.
