Last month, the D’Auria family celebrated Alberto D’Auria’s 80th birthday and 44 years of running their café on Hampstead Heath. Shortly after the celebrations, the café was closed and the site taken over by Daisy Green Collection, led by Prue Freeman, adding another location to their growing London café chain. But the wider dispute over cafés on the Heath is far from over. At Parliament Hill Lido, operators Matthews and Fernandez, through Hoxton Beach, are challenging the decision by the City of London Corporation to retender the sites. They claim the process was unfair and lacked transparency. The case has attracted strong public support, including a petition with more than 22,000 signatures, a letter from Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and a parliamentary question raised by MP Tulip Siddiq. This video looks at the café dispute—and the powerful institution managing the Heath.
