(7 Apr 2011) 1. Wide of author Joseph Lelyveld holding his book "Great Soul" 2. Wide of book 3. Tight shot of book 4. Pan of book 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Lelyveld, Author of Great Soul: "They're (Gandhi and Hermann Kallenbach) very concerned with diet for this reason. They seemed to think that all appetites are connected and so if you want to control one you have to control another. I conclude from that, that they were in a celibate relationship that still is difficult to understand and perhaps more difficult today than it would have been then because our values have changed in many ways, not just about sex, but about friendship between men and men. I conclude they were not hypocrites and they were living the life they said they were living." 6. Tight of book 7. Wide of Lelyveld, zoom into book 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Lelyveld, Author of Great Soul: "My message would be, read the book. Hold it in your hands see what the scope of it is. It is not a book about the sex life of Mahatma Gandhi. It is a book about his struggle for social justice in India and the evolution of his social values which were largely formed in South Africa and how that happened. The values he brought home and what they inspired him to do." 9. Tight shot of Lelyveld's hands 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Lelyveld, Author of Great Soul: "In a long political career of half a century he was certainly on the side of free speech and that has been said by a number of leading Indian intellectuals and indeed two grandsons and one great-grandson of Gandhi. Whatever their attitudes to the book they think it is ridiculous to consider banning it" 11. Wide of Lelyveld STORYLINE: The author of a controversial book about Mahatma Gandhi says he does not believe the Indian leader had a sexual relationship with a German man named Hermann Kallenbach. Joseph Lelyveld said after reading letters sent between Kallenbach and Gandhi, he believes "they were in a celibate relationship." Although not out yet in India, "Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India" has been banned by the western Indian state of Gujarat after reviews of Lelyveld's book suggested Gandhi had a homosexual relationship with Kallenbach. The book examines Gandhi's struggle for social justice and the evolution of his social values. Further bans have been proposed in India, where homosexuality was illegal until 2009 and still carries social stigma. Lelyveld has said that his work does not allege Gandhi was gay or bisexual, claiming the book is being misinterpreted. When asked what he would like to say to Narendra Modi, the Gujarat Chief Minister, Lelyveld said he would ask the Minister to "read the book." Lelyveld, a former executive editor of The New York Times, won a general non-fiction Pulitzer for "Move Your Shadow: South Africa, Black and White" in 1986.
