Israel Yemen Attack: Thousands Mourn Houthi Leaders Killed in Israeli Strike, Vow Revenge

Israel Yemen Attack: Thousands of mourners filled the Al Saleh mosque in Yemen’s capital Sanaa on Monday for the funeral of 12 senior Houthi leaders, including their prime minister, killed in an Israeli airstrike last week. The unprecedented strike, which targeted a large gathering during a televised speech by top Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi, wiped out most members of the group’s cabinet and marked the deadliest blow to Houthi leadership to date. Chanting anti-Israel and anti-American slogans, mourners pledged revenge as Mohammed Miftah — now acting head of the Houthi-run government — accused Israel, the U.S., and regional allies of orchestrating the attack with the help of spies inside Yemen. Israel said the strike aimed at the Houthis’ defense minister, chief of staff, and other senior officials. The fate of the Houthis’ powerful defense chief, Mohamed al-Atifi, remains unclear as he has not been seen since the attack. The Houthis, aligned with Iran and active supporters of Hamas in Gaza, have escalated attacks on shipping in the Red Sea since late 2023, drawing retaliatory strikes from the U.S. and Israel.
