The expense of raising another child may have prompted men to take matters into their own hands. Researchers noticed an upturn in sterilization procedures when the economy turned downward. But doctors can't be sure what caused it. "I've seen a trend on vasectomy increasing. I think it's being conscious on how much effort the woman has during pregnancies so a lot of men are taking responsibility," says Dr. Alejandro Miranda- Sousa, urologist on Lee Memorial Health System's medical staff. Researchers in Wisconsin are studying the trend. They found the increase in vasectomy started in 2007 and seemed to level off at the end of the recession in 2012. The study is surveying the income level of patients and comparing it to a drop in median salaries. There could be another factor: the procedure is now easier than ever before, because many doctors offer a no-cut technique. In a no scalpel vasectomy, doctors puncture the skin to access and disable the sperm-transport system. "We divide it, we cauterize it, we remove a little segment and put a tiny clip to make sure it's a permanent and effective procedure. It heals on it's own, we don't have to put in any stitches and it makes the procedure much more simple," says Dr. Alejandro Miranda- Sousa. Quick and for the most part painless, sterilization procedures are not immediate. "The whole area upstream has sperm still and the process to flush the system will be around three months," says Dr. Miranda- Sousa. Whatever the motivation, men should be sure they're getting a procedure that is safe, effective and right for them.
