Trauma treatment and mental health care programme for people on the autism spectrum – a chance for health and a better life. J. Lawicka1 1Prodeste Foundation, President of Foundation, Wrocław, Poland Trigger warning: Abuse, Eating disorders, body hatred and fat phobia, Homophobia and heterosexism, Mental illness, Self-harm, Sexual assault, Suicide, Violence, Death and dying Practical impact: Studies show that many autistic people suffer from mental health crises. Among the many causes of this condition, one of the most important is traumatic experiences related to early attachment trauma, peer violence, rejection and the inability to meet basic needs throughout life. For the last three years I have been developing a unique project called "Trauma Treatment and Mental Health Care Programme for People on Autism Spectrum". I would like to share my experience and that of my team so that units specialising in humanistic methods of diagnosis and treatment of autistic people with trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depressive-anxiety disorder, psychotic disorders and others, taking into account the specificity of autistic development and the latest scientific reports (e.g. from the field of pharmacogenetics), can be established all over Europe. Autistic people experience real limitations in access to both diagnosis and treatment in the area of mental health. Too often, the symptomatology of problems in this area is wrongly attributed to being on the spectrum, depriving autistic people of their right to adequate health care. In particular, this access is limited for people with intellectual challenges. The Trauma Treatment and Mental Health Care for People on the Spectrum Programme shows that it can be different. Everyone needs help to feel good. Autistic people, even those with learning difficulties, should get good care. This means giving them right help. I have been running a Foundation for 16 years to help people. In my team, we have doctors, therapists, and teachers. We made a way to check how autistic people feel and what they need. We have helped over 1,000 people. We also give psychotherapy to autistic people who feel very bad or are in a crisis. We help also people who can’t speak and those with big learning difficulties. We help families too. We teach parents how to make a strong and loving bond with their children. This helps autistic kids grow up happy and healthy. Our idea is: "we want a healthy and good life for people on the spectrum." We also run groups where children, teenagers, and adults can do things they like and feel good. In futore, we want to make new tools to help autistic people who feel deep pain or trauma.
