Titles read: "NORMANDIE FIRE - FIRST PICTURES". New York, United States of America. Various shots of a fire raging on the liner 'Normandie', recently renamed 'Lafayette'. Commentator explains that the ship was being converted into a troop ship and the fire was started by sparks from an acetylene blow lamp being used close to bales of inflammable material. Crowds of workers and onlookers are kept at a safe distance on the dockside by mounted police while firemen train powerful hoses on the ship. Casualties are brought away from the burning ship. Closer shots of the liner show she is taking on an alarming list, due to her fire doors being closed and the huge amounts of water being pumped onto her upper decks. The next morning the ship had capsized. Commentator wonders if it is a case of sabotage. FILM ID:1318.16 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV.
